Diljit Dosanjh made a statement at his MET Gala debut on Monday. The Punjabi hitmaker walked the blue carpet at the prestigious fashion event in New York, proudly representing his culture and roots in a Prabal Gurung ensemble. He received widespread praise for blending his Punjabi heritage with the Black Dandyism theme of the gala, with many recognizing that his look paid tribute to the Maharaja of Patiala. Diljit’s team shared that they had hoped to bring the homage even closer by wearing the Maharaja’s personal jewelry, but they were unfortunately denied.

Dressed like a Maharaja, Diljit Dosanjh turned heads in a custom Prabal Gurung outfit. He embraced traditional attire, including a turban (a symbol of Sikh identity), a kurta, and tehmat (a long tunic with draped bottoms). His cape featured Gurumukhi script, and he completed the look with a sword. In an interview with the New York Times, Diljit spoke about his ensemble and its connection to the theme. He said, “It’s what I’ve been doing all this time. It’s about carrying your identity with pride, right?”
However, the singer’s team revealed that they had tried to secure a special piece of jewellery to make the look even more remarkable. In 1928, the Maharaja of Patiala commissioned Cartier to create a diamond necklace weighing 1,000 carats — the largest necklace ever made by the French jeweller. The Patiala necklace, which contained an astonishing 2,900 diamonds, was valued at Rs.10 crores at the time ($2.5 billion or Rs. 21,000 crores today). Unfortunately, their request to include this iconic piece was denied.
The New York Times reported that Diljit’s stylist, Abhilasha Devnani, attempted to borrow the iconic Cartier necklace for the night but was informed that it is “sealed in a museum.” Ultimately, she turned to Indian jeweller Golecha to create jewellery inspired by the prince’s collection, which included a turban brooch.
The MET Gala, officially known as the Costume Institute Benefit, is an annual haute couture fundraising event held to support the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan. In addition to Diljit, the 2025 Met Gala saw notable Indian representation from Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Kiara Advani, and designers Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra, and Prabal Gurung. Socialites Natasha Poonawala and Isha Ambani were also in attendance.
