At the centre of Jab Khuli Kitaab’s story is an old couple – ‘Gopal’ (Pankaj Kapur) and ‘Anusuya’ (Dimple Kapadia). What is interesting is that the duo have been married for more than five decades. ‘Gopal’ is shown as the epitome of a perfect husband since he took care of his wife day and night after she fell into a coma. However, while their relationship, built on simple routines, precious memories, and silent understanding, seems calm and stable on the surface, it does not take long for it all to come crashing down. Everything changes after ‘Anusuya’ wakes up from her coma and decides to reveal a long-buried secret.
‘Anusuya’s’ revelation not only leaves ‘Gopal’ hurt and confused, but also alters how he views their relationship. Ultimately, ‘Gopal’ decides to divorce ‘Anusuya’ despite having been together for more than 50 years, leaving their family in complete shock. Things don’t end so easily between the couple as ‘Anusuya’ refuses to leave her husband, no matter how persistent ‘Gopal’ is in his choice to divorce her. After ‘Gopal’ ends up finding a young divorce lawyer to help him with the same, the couple are forced to revisit their past, which involves years of memories, sacrifices, and also misunderstandings.
