How many do we score? Suryakumar jokes after England nearly chase 254 in semifinal

India captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed that he was extremely nervous after his team’s narrow seven-run win over England in the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Thursday, March 5 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After being put in to bat first, India notched up the highest total in T20 World Cup knockouts, posting 253/7 in their 20 overs.

Sanju Samson once again led the batting charge with a phenomenal innings of 89 (42), studded with eight fours and seven sixes. In reply, England gave India a major scare as they almost chased down the massive target, eventually finishing their innings on 246/7 in their 20 overs. Jacob Bethell played a heroic knock of 105 (48), laced with eight fours and seven sixes.

Following India’s narrow victory, Suryakumar revealed that he was nervous during the second innings and even had a light-hearted chat with Harry Brook during the chase, asking him how many runs England needed to score against his side.

“Oh my God, I just told Harry, how many more do we need to score against you guys? But at the end of the day, it was a good wicket and the way they batted was excellent. I don’t want to take any credit away from them as well. I think they were always in the game and always in the chase, but the way Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and all the other bowlers pulled the game back, I think it was unbelievable,” said Suryakumar in the post-match presentation.

Suryakumar also mentioned that his heart rate was high throughout England’s chase, but he was relieved that the team had secured a place in the final.

“Very nervous. If someone had checked my heart rate, it would have easily been 160 or 175 plus. But then it’s part of the game. It was a wonderful match and a wonderful semi-final. All that is behind us now, and we are very happy to go into the final,” he added.

How India made a comeback in the match?

England were well on course in their run chase during the middle overs, courtesy of a game-changing partnership between Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks (35 off 20) for the fifth wicket.

However, a stunning catch from Axar Patel on the boundary in the 14th over brought India back into the game, and they eventually sealed a spot in the final. The Men in Blue will next take on New Zealand national cricket team in the final on Sunday, March 8, at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
