Police stop JNU student rally amid heavy security; leaders detained, FIR filed

Several members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) were detained on Thursday after they attempted to march from the campus to the Ministry of Education, even as the Delhi Police registered an FIR against JNUSU office-bearers in connection with earlier unrest.

Students gathered at Sabarmati T Point in the afternoon and began moving in groups holding placards and banners. As they tried to take the rally outside the campus, they were stopped at the heavily barricaded university gate amid strong police deployment, according to PTI.

JNUSU president Aditi Mishra, former president Nitish Kumar were among the 51 protesters detained after the students clashed with the police at the college gate when they tried to take the rally out of the campus, PTI reported.

The march, organisers said, was aimed at highlighting alleged institutional neglect in higher education institutions.

Security has been tightened inside and outside the campus following violence earlier this week. On Monday, a protest turned violent, leading to stone-pelting and physical altercations between JNUSU members and the ABVP. Police have since registered an FIR against JNUSU office-bearers in connection with the incident.

The students’ union has been demanding stricter implementation of University Grants Commission regulations, increased funding for public institutions, enactment of the proposed Rohith Vemula Act to curb caste-based discrimination in higher education, and the resignation of the JNU Vice-Chancellor over alleged caste remarks made in a February 16 podcast.
