The viral baby monkey named Punch from a Japanese zoo is now helping Mumbai Police spread an important message; dial 112 in an emergency.
Sharing his image on social media, Mumbai Police posted a message that read, “Be wise, report vice,” along with the hashtags #JustPunchIn112 and #WiseMonkeyAdvise.
The clever wordplay linking the monkey’s name with the helpline number caught users’ attention, blending emotion with a civic message. Authorities reminded citizens that 112 can be accessed via phone call, SMS, email, panic button, or through the ‘112 India’ mobile application.

Punch, known as Panchi-kun in Japan, lives at the Ichikawa City Zoo. Born in July last year, he was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth. For primates, early maternal bonding plays a critical role in emotional development, social behaviour and long-term survival skills. Without that foundation, young macaques can struggle with anxiety and attachment issues.
According to reports from the zoo, the young macaque repeatedly attempted to approach other adult monkeys in the enclosure, seeking warmth and companionship. Videos showing him trying to connect with the group moved viewers online, many of whom expressed sympathy for the infant’s resilience and longing for comfort.
By using Punch’s now-familiar face, Mumbai Police tapped into a story that had already resonated widely. The campaign not only spreads awareness about the 112 helpline but also demonstrates how social media trends can be repurposed for public good.
