Ever since Ranveer Singh starrer Dhurandhar released on December 5, 2025, the film has only seized attention. Every day, there is some other astonishing fact that comes to the spotlight about the film. And now a viral reel claims that Aditya Dhar’s superhit crime drama was copied from Ram Gopal Varma’s cult classic, Satya.
Is Dhurandhar copied from Satya?
Surprised? Yes, a viral reel has been doing the rounds on social media, showing parts of the film that have striking similarities with the 1998 crime drama, Satya. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, the film starred Manoj Bajpayee in the titular role of gangster, ‘Bhiku Mhatre’. The video showed several scenes of Dhurandhar exactly the same as Satya. The plot of both films also has uncanny similarities.
In both the films, the protagonist, ‘Hamza’ and ‘Satya’ get attacked by goons after coming to the city. They later join a gang, and a gang member gives a tour of their room. Both the protagonists in both Dhurandhar and Satya later kill the goons who initially attacked them. Both ‘Hamza’ and ‘Satya’ defy orders, which eventually lead to a clash among the gangs.
Rehman Dakait’s character draws uncanny similarities to ‘Bhiku Mhatre’
Not only this, the antagonist in Dhurandhar, ‘Rehman Dakait’, played by Akshaye Khanna, also draw similarities to Satya’s ‘Bhiku Mhatre’, played by Manoj Bajpayee. Rehman’s famous Lyari speech was compared to Bhiku’s monologue. Not just this, both Rehman and Bhiku die a tragic death, betrayed by one of their own.
Is Dhurandhar based on a real-life story?
Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, begins with a disclaimer that it is a fictional movie; however, a few incidents are inspired by real-life. For those who do not know, multiple events mentioned in Dhurandhar also occurred in real life, including the 1999 Indian Airlines Flight IC-814 Hijacking. The flight was hijacked in December 1999, soon after its takeoff from Kathmandu. Reportedly, the hijackers had forced the plane to land in Afghanistan and demanded the release of jailed ter*****ts and money. Reportedly, two passengers had lost their lives as well.
Characters were loosely inspired by real-life people
Apart from events, multiple characters of Dhurandhar were inspired by real-life people. Akshaye Khanna, who played the role of ‘Rehman Dakait’ was inspired by a real person. Sardar Abdul Rehman Baloch, a.k.a. Rehman Dakait, was an actual ga*****r in Karachi. Reportedly, he had led multiple crime networks. He died in a police encounter in 2009. Sanjay Dutt essayed the character of ‘SP Chaudhary Aslam’, which is inspired by senior police officer, Chaudhry Aslam Khan. He had been part of multiple encounters with criminals.
Dhurandhar’s sequel has geared up excitement
After the success of Dhurandhar, its sequel, Dhurandhar 2 is all set to hit the theatres on March 19, 2026. It will clash with Yash’s film, Toxic. Talking about the cast, Dhurandhar 2 will bring back the core cast, including Ranveer Singh, R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, Sara Arjun and more. It has also been reported that Akshaye Khanna will appear in the sequel in flashback scenes. Dhurandhar 2 is expected to be darker and will also feature the real story of Ranveer Singh’s character, ‘Jaskirat Singh Rangi’.
