A 13-year-old girl in Pune was allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted by an acquaintance who offered to drop her to school, police said on Friday, officials said on Friday.
Cops have arrested 29-year-old Dnyaneshwar Suresh Rairikar from Warje Malwadi in connection with the crime and was remanded to police custody for two days. According to the complaint filed by the survivour’s mother, the incident occurred on the morning of February 18 between 6.50 am and 7.20 am near Dudhane Lawns.
Police said the accused, who was known to the girl, approached her while she was waiting outside her home to leave for school and offered her a lift. Instead of taking her to school, he allegedly drove to a secluded location and sexually assaulted her inside the vehicle.
After the assault, Rairikar even threatened the girl, warning her not to tell anyone, the complaint said. Traumatised and scared, the minor did not disclose the incident immediately.
She informed her mother later that night, following which the family approached the police. Officials registered a case and launched a search for the accused, leading to his immediate arrest.
A senior Pune Police official confirmed that Rairikar worked as a driver and had recently purchased a second-hand car, which was used in the crime. The vehicle has been seized by the police as evidence.
