What To Know

- TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek of Angelo sharing his plans for his future with his brother, Michael.
Memory of a Killer, in its fifth episode, is going back in time five years. TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek at a time when killing wasn’t in Angelo’s (Patrick Dempsey) plan for his future — anymore — and his brother Michael (Richard Clarkin) was not yet in care facility.
In the Monday, February 23, episode, titled “Betrayal,” Angelo approaches his brother as he plays the piano in Dutch’s (Michael Imperioli) restaurant. “Feeling alright?” he checks. “Why wouldn’t I?” Michael asks. Angelo notes he seems little tired, but Michael just brushes off his concern, leading to a bit of joking between the brothers.
Then, Angelo gets serious: “I wanted to tell you: I’m leaving. Leaving. Quitting.” Michael stops playing at that. “Does Dutch know?” he asks. Not yet. Well, here’s where we get a sense of just how terrifying Dutch is — he’s the one running his hitman business out of his restaurant and giving Angelo his targets not just back then but also in the present day, so we know something’s going to happen that leads to this plan being thrown out the window.
“He isn’t just going to let you walk away, you know that, right?” Michael tells Angelo and reminds him what happened to the last guy who wanted out. “That‘s what leaving looks like.” Watch the full clip above for all the gruesome details and Angelo’s reaction.
What’s important to remember is that Dutch doesn’t know that Angelo has a family — and what he does to those who try to leave may explain why, still, by the present day, Angelo hasn’t told his friend about his late wife and daughter.
“It is a decision he made a long time ago. And they have a long history, as it’s alluded to in the pilot. They talk about being childhood friends or knowing each other since childhood. The history of their relationship, a little bit of the dynamics there as they were and as they are now, we are going to explore that more,” co-showrunner and executive producer Aaron Zelman told us after the premiere. “If you keep watching, you’ll get much more information about that and you’ll understand a little bit more about the complexity of the trust and the issues between them and the trust they have and the trust maybe they don’t necessarily have, which is something that will also play out throughout the season in a way that is reflected in the storytelling and hopefully in a very satisfying way.”
In “Betrayal,” Fox teases, “while on a hit Angelo remembers a pivotal moment in his life, 5 years ago, when he learned his brother had Alzheimer’s and Angelo was forced to make a life-changing decision.”
In the present day, Michael’s in a care facility where Angelo visits — and Angelo’s facing the possibility that he’s heading down the same path as he begins exhibiting signs of early Alzheimer’s, which is very dangerous in his line of work.
