The Kerala Story 2 has received a U/A certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), permitting viewers aged 14 and above to watch the film, despite its sensitive subject matter. The decision comes a day after the film’s trailer was released and generated a wide range of reactions among the audience. The Kerala Story 2, however, has received a less restrictive rating. This outcome is notable given the film’s content and the ongoing public debate surrounding its trailer.
The move has been met with discussions among viewers and film analysts about the criteria applied by the board in this case. Some have pointed out that this could signal a shift in how regulatory bodies are interpreting and responding to changing societal attitudes towards cinema and storytelling.
The development is a major boost for the makers, given the sensitive subject highlighted in the trailer. Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah has now reacted to the film receiving a U/A certificate.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Shah expressed happiness over the CBFC granting the film a U/A rating. He said he is “grateful” to the board for the decision, adding that the certification will allow the film to reach young girls and families across the country.
“I am truly grateful to the Censor Board for granting a UA certificate to our film. It reflects their faith in the intent and integrity with which we have told this story. This decision is especially important because it allows us to reach young girls and families across the country. Our objective has always been awareness, to inform, and to empower young minds to stay alert and make informed choices. I sincerely thank the Board (CBFC) for their fair and thoughtful consideration in enabling this message to reach the next generation,” he said.
Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, The Kerala Story 2 features Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia and Aishwarya Ojha in the lead roles. The trailer depicts their lives spiralling into a nightmare after they fall in love with Muslim boys.
The certification comes at a point where the sequel has been sparked controversy over its portrayal of religious conversions, with several viewers alleging that the film exaggerates real-life incidents. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the film, describing it as “poisonous propaganda.”
On Wednesday, Vijayan released a statement warning that the upcoming film could undermine Kerala’s tradition of religious harmony, which he described as fundamental to the state’s identity.
Vijayan cited the earlier instalment of the film as having the “intent to spread hatred against the state and undermine its secular tradition”.
The Kerala Story, the first film in the series, featured Adah Sharma, Sonia Balani, Yogita Bihani, and Siddhi Idnani. Despite bans and controversy, it achieved box office success. Sudipto Sen won a National Film Award as Best Director for the film, while Prasantanu Mohapatra won the honour for Best Cinematography.
The Kerala Story 2 is scheduled for release on February 27.
