US President Donald Trump on Tuesday declared that a sweeping new trade agreement with Japan has officially begun, unveiling what he described as the first wave of investments under a USD 550 billion bilateral pact aimed at boosting US energy production and critical minerals supply.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Our MASSIVE Trade Deal with Japan has just launched!”
Japan is moving forward with the first tranche of investments — totalling USD 36 billion — in US oil, gas and critical minerals projects, part of its broader USD 550 billion commitment under the agreement reached with the Trump administration.
“Japan is now officially, and financially, moving forward with the FIRST set of Investments under its $550 BILLION Dollar Commitment to invest in the United States of America,” Trump said, calling it part of a “Historic Trade Deal to REVITALIZE the American Industrial Base”.
The announcement comes ahead of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s visit to Washington, signalling deepening economic ties between the two allies.
ENERGY AND INDUSTRIAL PUSH
Trump detailed three major projects he described as “TREMENDOUS” — spanning oil and gas in Texas, power generation in Ohio and critical minerals in Georgia.
The Ohio gas power plant, he said, “will be the largest in history”, while a new LNG facility, in what he called the “Gulf of America”, would drive exports and reinforce US “Energy DOMINANCE”. A critical minerals project in Georgia, he added, would “end our FOOLISH dependence on Foreign Sources”.
“The scale of these projects are so large, and could not be done without one very special word, TARIFFS,” Trump wrote, crediting his trade policies for securing the deal.
JOBS AND SECURITY
The President framed the agreement as a cornerstone of his economic agenda, saying it would create “HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of GREAT American Jobs” and strengthen national and economic security.
“America is building again. America is producing again. And America is WINNING again,” Trump wrote.
The White House has described the deal as a long-term strategic partnership aimed at revitalising domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on foreign energy and mineral supplies.
“This is a very exciting and HISTORIC time for the United States of America and Japan,” Trump said.
