Tom Sachs and Nike‘s collaborative line is back in force, as a new version of his intentionally “boring” sneaker has emerged just a week after the release of a utilitarian clothing collection.
The Tom Sachs x Nike General Purpose Shoe will get its first leather upper in black. Previous editions of the model all featured a mesh base with suede overlays, but the forthcoming dark look features leather for both elements. Black perforated leather is used for the GPS’ base and tongue, and the holes are ditched for more black leather at the toe tip, heel counter and eyestay. White pebbled leather then forms the Swoosh and mustache, while a brown midsole sits atop a black outsole. An additional hit of white arrives via the tongue tag, and blue nylon pull tabs appear at its top and bottom and again at the heel.
As the long-awaited Mars Yard 3.0 was still years away, the General Purpose shoe made its debut in 2022. Marketing for the launch colorway led with the word “boring” along with the manifesto: “Your sneakers shouldn’t be the most exciting thing about you. They are tools, and what matters about your tools is that they work. They do their job so you can do yours. You put them on and forget about them. You focus on getting a little bit faster, a little bit sharper, on finding the signal in the noise.”
Sachs and Nike strayed even further from the typical avenues of hype by making the second colorway available at Kohl’s. Two more followed before Nike put a pause on its relationship with the artist because of troubling workplace allegations levied against him, and the original colorway got a restock last year after their ties were resumed.
Those who participated in Sachs’ I.S.R.U. app challenge but didn’t earn the opportunity to purchase the Mars Yard 3.0 were instead offered preorders for a dedicated colorway to be delivered this summer.
The black leather Tom Sachs x Nike General Purpose Shoe doesn’t yet have a firm release date but is expected to drop in the spring. Stock should be available through Sachs’ website and select third-party retailers, as images have been leaked from global supplier Size?, and pricing is set at $110.
