Each entry combines facts, artist information and captivating behind-the-scenes chart details provided by author Richard West. For record collectors, chart watchers and those reliving the soundtrack to their youth, this is the perfect guide to one unforgettable year in pop.

    EVERY UK HIT SINGLE: 1980
In 1980, the UK singles chart was a kaleidoscope of shifting styles, with the radiant dominance of disco beginning to fade as synth-pop, ska revival and post-punk surged into view. Although the likes of Chic and Odyssey still rode the disco wave, newcomers such as Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and Ultravox signalled the rise of electronic textures. Ska and 2 Tone exploded via The Specials and Madness, injecting youthful energy and social commentary, while punk’s legacy evolved with The Clash and The Jam, who brought a sharper political edge to the chart.

Heavier and more ambitious styles also made a notable impact. New Wave of British Heavy Metal frontrunners Iron Maiden and Saxon plus progenitors Judas Priest became chart regulars, pushing a harder and faster aesthetic into the mainstream. Progressive rock also maintained a strong presence, with Genesis and Rush proving that complex arrangements and virtuoso musicianship still resonated with a wide audience, while pop leaning prog icons Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush scored several hits between them. Legacy artists such as David Bowie, Roxy Music and Paul McCartney also redefined their sound for the new decade.

For music lovers, Thursday evenings meant gathering around the TV for Top of the Pops, where chart stars stepped into the spotlight to become part of the nation’s musical memory. On late Sunday afternoons, the latest UK Top 40 countdown on BBC Radio 1 was almost a ritual; whether scribbled onto cassette labels or debated in school corridors, it was the pulse of pop culture, guiding record shop missions and shaping the soundtrack of a generation.

This book transports us back – single by single, week by week – to the sound of 1980. Each song is listed in the order it first appeared in the Top 40, tracing the year’s musical shifts as they ebbed and flowed. It is the story of pop as it unfolded: heard on the airwaves, hunted in the shops and etched into memory across the UK.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Richard West is a British musician, songwriter and author. Growing up in the ‘80s, he fell in love with the UK singles chart, listening to the Top 40 every week and immersing himself in the sounds of the era. Those broadcasts sparked a lifelong fascination with popular music and a dream of one day finding his own place among the chart entries.

He eventually fulfilled that ambition as a member of the progressive metal bands Threshold and Oblivion Protocol, securing chart recognition across continental Europe as well as the UK’s specialist rankings. Alongside his musical career, he has published the memoir ‘Maybe a Writer: My Life in Threshold’ that explores his journey from chart-obsessed teenager to established recording artist.

‘Every UK Hit Single: 1980’ is the first volume in a series that will document the entire decade as well as the years immediately preceding it.

West lives in Surrey with his wife Farrah, where his passion for music remains undimmed. Away from the stage and studio, he can most often be found revisiting the sounds of the ‘80s – the era that most inspired him and continues to shape his love of music.
