Mumbai blaze: Two dead after fire breaks out at Andheri’s Narayan Plaza

Two people died after a fire broke out in a four-storey commercial building in Mumbai’s Andheri area on Wednesday evening, with firefighters battling the blaze for nearly three hours, civic officials said.

“A fire erupted at 6.36 pm on the third floor of Tex Centre in Narayan Plaza,” a civic official said, adding that the building is located in the Chandivali area of Mumbai’s eastern suburb of Andheri.

According to officials, personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade managed to douse the fire after sustained operations that lasted close to three hours. “The entire four-storey structure was smoke logged,” the official said.

During search and rescue operations, firefighters found two people unconscious inside an office on the premises. “They were rescued and rushed to hospitals, but were declared brought dead,” the official said.

The victims were identified as Bhagvan Pitale (30), who was taken to Seven Hills Hospital, and Sumant Jadhav (28), who was shifted to Rajawadi Hospital. Both were declared dead on arrival.

Officials said the fire was confined to Unit No. 303 of M/s Neocell Industries and spread across an area of around 1,500 square feet. “The blaze involved electric wiring and installations, lithium-ion batteries, office files, furniture, wooden partitions, glass windows, doors and the false ceiling,” the official said.

The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
