US President Donald Trump and his advisers are discussing possible ways to acquire Greenland, with the White House saying the use of the US military remains an option if required.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in response to questions from Reuters, the White House said Trump views Greenland as a key national security priority for the United States, particularly in the context of growing strategic competition in the Arctic region.
The statement said the president believes securing Greenland is vital to deterring adversaries and protecting US interests in the Arctic. It added that Trump and his team are reviewing a range of options to advance what it described as an important foreign policy objective.
“President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States,” the White House said, stressing the region’s strategic importance amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Arctic.
US MILITARY OPTION NOT RULED OUT
The White House also made clear that military involvement has not been ruled out. It said the use of the US armed forces is “always an option” available to the commander-in-chief as discussions continue.
Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, citing its strategic location and natural resources. His comments have previously drawn sharp reactions from Denmark, which has insisted the island is not for sale.
