Wolf Supermoon to rise tonight: Will the skies be clear to see it? Best places to watch

As the Wolf Supermoon graces the sky on January 3, 2026, skywatchers across India have a golden opportunity to start the year with a breathtaking celestial show.

This first full Moon aligns closely with perigee, bringing it about 3,62,312 kilometres from Earth, appearing up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than usual.

The glowing orb will paint rooftops, beaches, and hills in silver light, drawing families outdoors for shared moments of wonder.

WHAT MAKES THIS SUPERMOON STAND OUT?

Known as the Wolf Moon from ancient tales of winter howls, it will reach peak fullness around 3:33 pm IST on January 3.

The Moon rises after sunset, between 5:45 pm and 6:00 pm IST depending on location, often looking enormous low on the horizon due to a familiar optical illusion.

Nasa points out these alignments raise tides and reveal crisp lunar craters and plains. With Isro’s Chandrayaan missions in recent memory, it adds a layer of national pride gazing at explored terrain.

    WILL CLOUDS SPOIL THE SHOW?

India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts indicate persistent dense fog over the northern plains into the evenings, affecting Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of Rajasthan, sharply reducing visibility of the supermoon. Western disturbances may bring clouds or light precipitation to Himalayan regions.

Southern and western areas promise clearer views of the celestial spectacle. Mumbai offers partly clear nights with temperatures around 28 degrees Celsius, excellent from beaches or promenades. Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kerala expect mostly clear skies, perhaps with light morning mist clearing by evening, and comfortable 25 to 29 degrees Celsius conditions, perfect from hilltops like Nandi Hills or coastal spots.

Head out post-sunset for the best experience. No gear needed, just a spot away from city lights. The rising Moon pairs stunningly with landmarks or trees for that oversized effect.

If fog or clouds block the view, apps like Stellarium can simulate it. This Wolf Supermoon on January 3 offers a serene reminder amid busy lives to look up and connect with the cosmos.
