Donald Trump said a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine is close, but one or two major issues still need to be resolved, with the fate of the eastern Donbas region chief among them.
Speaking to reporters alongside Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he said negotiations had made significant progress, though he declined to give an exact breakdown of what had been agreed.
He said the deal could be close to completion, estimating progress at around 95%, but adds, “I don’t like to say percentages”.
The future of Donbas — the eastern region encompassing Donetsk and Luhansk — remains unresolved. Russia has demanded that Ukraine cede the area, a position Kyiv has long rejected.
“We’re getting closer to an agreement on that. And that’s a big issue,” Trump said. “Certainly, that’s one of the big issues, and I think we’re closer.”
