For each exhaustive anthology — SoulMusic’s 12-disc box of Dionne Warwick‘s decade on Scepter Records, for starters — a dozen single-album reissues were just as worthy of being singled out. No fewer than five of the titles listed were originally released by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell‘s Strata-East label, now under the stewardship of Mack Avenue. Four of us were captivated by a mysterious Mal Waldron date that few heard upon original release in 1975, while some discovered that Buckingham Nicks — having been out of print for over 50 years — was hardly a pre-fame embarrassment. And then there were myriad multi-disc compilations catering to explorers of old school R&B, synth pop, British folk, German rock, and more, even electroclash.
