Netanyahu to brief Trump on potential new Iran strikes: Report

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump on December 29 at Mar-a-Lago, is expected to outline his concerns about Iran’s ballistic-missile activity — though the emphasis this time is less on dramatic warnings and more on encouraging Washington to stay focused on Tehran, according to an NBC News report citing multiple sources.

Rather than sounding alarm bells, Israeli officials appear intent on highlighting what they say are signs that Iran is working to ramp up production after earlier strikes damaged parts of its missile program. A source familiar with the preparations, along with several former US officials briefed on the discussions, told NBC that Israel wants to make sure Trump considers available military options, should he see them as necessary.

The report also notes that Israel believes Iran is attempting to restore nuclear-enrichment facilities the United States bombed in June during a short conflict earlier this year. Still, according to the sources, Israeli officials are prioritizing what they describe as Iran’s more immediate efforts to rebuild missile-production capacity and shore up weakened air-defense systems.
