Selena Gomez finally explains reason for why her voice has changed so much

Selena Gomez says there’s a reason why her voice sounds different — because her throat swells up.

The “Calm Down” singer responded to a fan question about why her voice has changed over the years in an Instagram Live session Tuesday.

“Yeah, I’ve gotten this question a few times, the voice thing,” Gomez admitted.

The pop star, 33, began to explain a reason before backtracking her sentence.

“So sometimes when I’m on… never mind,” she said, cutting herself off. “There’s no excuse, I don’t really care.”

She then explained that the voice change is caused by occasional throat swelling.

“I think my point is, is that sometimes things happen,” she said. “I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all. That’s good.”

Gomez then thanked her followers for being transparent with her.

“I’m glad y’all are being real with me on the Live. I appreciate it though, for real,” she said.

Gomez has been candid about her ongoing health struggles — specifically her battle with Lupus.

The chronic autoimmune disease can cause swelling and irritation, also known as inflammation, that may affect joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Fans flooded social media to praise the Rare Beauty founder for her honest response.

“Love how honest and open she is 🫶 Selena addressing it herself with grace and confidence — that’s real strength. Always rooting for her ❤️,” one person commented on the post.

“I’m glad she cleared this up bc we all grew up knowing her voice then there was this drastic switch and then ppl were making up all types of. Hope she gets better 💕,” a second person said.

“Selena Gomez is pure strength—opening up about her lupus struggles and voice changes with zero shame. ❤️,” a fan gushed, adding that it “takes real courage to live so openly under constant scrutiny. We love you, stay strong queen! 👑💪.”

Gomez has experienced other side effects from her Lupus battle, including weight fluctuation triggered by her treatment.

“When I’m taking [the medicine], I tend to hold a lot of water weight, and that happens very normally,” she shared in a 2023 Instagram Live video. “And then when I’m off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight.”

That same year, she spoke about her changing weight during an episode of the Apple TV+ series “Dear…”

“My weight would constantly fluctuate because I would be on certain medications,” she shared. “And obviously, people just ran with it… It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down.”

Gomez has also been candid about her beauty transformation, sharing all of the cosmetic procedures she has done.

After lots of plastic surgery speculation, the “Only Murder in the Building” actress shared that she has only ever had Botox.
