The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced to launch the ‘Vote Bachao, Samvidhan Bachao’ yatra in Uttar Pradesh, aimed at protecting democracy, the power of the vote and constitutional rights. The foot march will be led by AAP’s Uttar Pradesh in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh.
AAP leader Sanjay Singh has said the party will hold the yatra from December 21 to December 26. He said the march will pass through Rampur, Moradabad and Amroha, and will include four major public meetings along the route.
Singh said the objective of the padayatra is to make people aware of how voters’ names are being removed from electoral rolls in large numbers. He alleged that preparations are underway to cut nearly two crore votes in Uttar Pradesh. He claimed that what has happened earlier in Bihar, Maharashtra and Haryana is now being repeated in Uttar Pradesh.
He further alleged that in several districts, people who have been living there for generations are being harassed by branding them as Bangladeshis. Singh said such actions amount to “vote theft” and are against democracy.
Singh said the padayatra is being taken out to tell people the truth, help them understand their rights and protect the Constitution. He said the fight is for the people and for the dignity of democracy.
In a post on X, Singh called on people to join the yatra, stating that it will begin on December 21 from Rampur and conclude in Amroha on December 26. He said the yatra is being organised to safeguard voting rights and the Constitution, and appealed to citizens to participate in the foot march.
“This is not just a matter of vote, but a direct attack on democracy and the Constitution. Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar wrote the Constitution by giving every citizen an equal right to vote. Today, the same right is being snatched away by the BJP government,” Singh said in a statement earlier.
The ‘Vote Bachao, Samvidhan Bachao’ yatra comes a month after AAP launched the ‘Saryu to Sangam’ padayatra in Uttar Pradesh under Sanjay Singh’s leadership. That foot march began in Ayodhya with the slogan ‘Rozgar Do, Saamajik Nyay Do’ and started from the city’s historical landmark, Badi Devkali Tiraha.
The march covered around 200 kilometres and passed through several districts, including Sultanpur, Pratapgarh and Amethi, before heading towards its final destination, Prayagraj.
