Politicians are reacting to President Donald Trump’s post about the death of Rob and Michele Reiner.
Yesterday, the couple was found dead in their California home after being stabbed. Their son, Nick, has been booked on suspicion of murder. The LAPD has said that their investigation found that Nick murdered his parents.
The death of the actor-director, who was a political activist and critic of Trump, was marked by the president on Truth Social with a post that suggested his political beliefs were to blame: “A tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star has passed away…reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
Key Democrats were quite to condemn Trump’s statement:
Including senator Chuck Schumer:
And Texas representative Jasmine Crockett:
A few Republicans even called out Trump’s words. Kentucky representative Thomas Massie called the post “inappropriate and disrespectful,” adding, “I guess my elected COP colleagues, the VP, and White House staff will just ignore it because they’re afraid.”
Georgia representative and recent Trump dissenter Marjorie Taylor Greene similarly said, “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”
New York representative Mike Lawler said, “Regardless of one’s political views, no one should be subjected to violence, let alone at the hands of their own son. It’s a horrible tragedy that should engender sympathy and compassion from everyone in our country, period.”
And Oklahoma representative Stephanie Bice said, “A father and mother were murdered at the hands of their troubled son. We should be lifting the family up in prayer, not making this about politics.”
