Gujarat couple, child trying to migrate to Portugal, held hostage in Libya: Report

A couple from Gujarat’s Mehsana district and their three-year-old daughter have allegedly been taken hostage in Libya. The kidnappers have demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore, news agency PTI reported citing officials.

Kismatsinh Chavda, his wife Heenaben and their daughter Devanshi were kidnapped in the North African nation while trying to migrate to Portugal, where Chavda’s brother is settled, Mehsana Superintendent of Police Himanshu Solanki said.

The family, residents of Badalpura village in Mehsana district, was travelling with the help of a Portugal-based agent with plans to settle in the European country, he said. Mehsana Collector S.K. Prajapati has been informed about the incident.

According to the police, the family flew from Ahmedabad to Dubai on November 29. From Dubai, they were taken to Benghazi city in Libya, where they were allegedly kidnapped.

“Chavda’s brother is settled in Portugal, and the family was travelling with the help of an agent based there. The agents involved in the case are not Indians,” Solanki said.

The kidnappers have contacted the family’s relatives in Mehsana and demanded Rs 2 crore as ransom, he added.

According to PTI sources, llocal MLA CJ Chavda has also raised the issue with the State and Union governments,

Collector Prajapati said the victim’s relatives approached him on Friday (December 13, 2025). “The matter has been brought to the notice of the State Government as well as the Ministry of External Affairs,” he said.
