The art may still be getting unpacked and prepped but the other part of Art Basel Miami Beach — the parties, of course — got underway on Monday evening. Kicking things off was Cartier, which hosted a private dinner at the Miami outpost of chef Kwame Onwuachi’s restaurant Las’ Lap to celebrate the brand’s exhibit “Cartier: Panthère Into the Wild.”
Guests included Grace Van Patten and Karlie Kloss, as well as the requisite smattering of influencers and personalities, both in town from New York and local.
Kloss is a part-time Miami resident these days, though she was only in town for the top of the week’s affairs before heading to New York for the Chanel show.
“I just had a baby, so I’m so happy to be back and see friends. And so it’s so nice because all my friends are in town,” she said during the evening’s cocktail hour.
Her main survival tip for the busyness of the week? “I ride my bike everywhere. So when you’re sitting in traffic and you see me on a bike, that’s the insider trick,” she said.

Before heading to New York, Kloss was planning to check out the Cartier exhibit once she dropped her kids off at school the next morning. She’s worn the brand on numerous important occasions, from Met Galas to the PAC Icons Awards, and has started her own vintage collection as well.
“I think jewelry is so deeply personal and something that carries so many memories and also is something you pass on and it carries stories for generations. I started working at such a young age as a model and whenever I would sign a big contract, I would buy myself a piece of jewelry,” she said. “One of my favorites is a vintage Cartier Panthère from the ’70s with these emerald eyes. It’s divine.”
Another favorite vintage piece was given to her by her husband for their wedding, and she recently bought herself a pinky ring to mark the birth of her daughter, which she hopes to pass down to her some day.
“It justifies my fun,” she said.

Van Patten was sparkling in a Panthère choker and bracelets, paired with a black velvet strapless cocktail dress.
“We knew we were going to have a black dress so that the jewels would be the focus,” she said of the look.
The star of Hulu’s “Tell Me Lies” was just in town for Cartier, having most recently worn the brand to the Academy Gala a few weeks prior.
“It just makes me feel like a princess,” she said. “It’s like you put it on and it’s instant luxury, confidence and power. You feel almost protected.”

Van Patten was planning to have some time at home before gearing up for the release of the show’s third season in January.
“I think it’s different from both seasons, which will be really exciting to see how fans react,” she teased of the upcoming episodes. “I love being a part of it. I’ve never been a part of something that goes on longer than one season. So it’s been really eye-opening to grow with it and grow with these people I’ve been working with.”
