Ceramic Artist Masaomi Yasunaga Brings First Solo Museum Show to the ICA Miami

For Japanese ceramic artist Masaomi Yasunaga, the wear-and-tear of his work is intentional.

“Traces of Memory,” the artist’s first major solo museum exhibition, is now on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. The show, which opened during Art Week in Miami, includes a range of the artist’s organic stand-alone and wall-mounted sculptures, as well as a new site-specific installation.

The artist’s practice is rooted in the Sodeisha movement, an avant-garde approach to ceramics focusing on form rather than function of the final pieces. During the firing process,Yasunaga further transforms his handcrafted works by burying them in layers of materials, later unearthing them for a weathered effect.

The exhibition will remain on view at the museum through March 22.
