Whirlpool India shares tumbled on Thursday after a massive block trade triggered heavy selling pressure on the exchanges. The stock fell as much as 10.65% to Rs 1,073 on the BSE around 12:03 pm, making it one of the top intraday losers in the mid-cap space.
The slump followed a large 1.5 crore share transaction that took place in early trade as part of a block deal, making it one of the biggest single-day deals for the consumer durables major in recent years.
The buyers and sellers involved in the trade have not yet been disclosed. However, market chatter suggests that the promoter group is the likely seller, consistent with recent stake reductions carried out by the parent company.
Final details on pricing and allotment will be known once exchanges publish the block deal data.
Whirlpool of India is majority-owned by Whirlpool Mauritius, a subsidiary of US-based Whirlpool Corporation. The parent company has been reducing its stake in the Indian arm for close to two years as part of a broader capital reallocation exercise worldwide.
Promoter holding, which stood at nearly 75% in late 2023, has now dropped to around 51%, following several large on-market sales and block deals executed throughout 2024 and 2025. All promoter shares in the Indian unit remain unpledged.
It is worth noting that one of the biggest divestments by the parent took place in February 2024, when it offloaded nearly 30 million shares.
Market participants say today’s sale continues that pattern, indicating that the parent is likely freeing up capital for other priorities rather than exiting the India business entirely.
With the promoter gradually stepping back, institutional investors now own a significant chunk of Whirlpool of India’s free float. This includes foreign portfolio investors, domestic mutual funds and other institutional players, which have increased their exposure as the promoter stake has declined.
The stock may continue to see volatility until the exchange releases full block deal details and the market digests the identity of the participants. Large offloads by promoters typically weigh on near-term sentiment, though analysts say the long-term impact will depend on the company’s operating performance and the parent’s strategic direction.
