Two National Guard officers shot in Washington DC, suspect in custody

Two National Guard members have been shot in Washington, DC, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed, as authorities responded to a major security incident just one day before Thanksgiving.

The Metropolitan Police Department said a shooting had taken place only a few streets from the White House but could not yet confirm the identities or conditions of those wounded. A NewsMax White House correspondent earlier reported that a Secret Service agent had told him the victims were National Guard members.

    WHITE HOUSE RESPONDS

A White House spokeswoman said President Donald Trump had been briefed on the shooting of the two National Guard members.

The DC Police Department later said a suspect was in custody, though no further details were released.

A heavy police presence quickly locked down the area, with officers armed with assault rifles securing multiple blocks. Several police cars and ambulances were seen lining the streets as investigators moved in.

Authorities have released no further details as the investigation continues.

    This is a developing story.
