Tensions erupted in Lonavala near Maharashtra’s Pune after a dispute between local and outstation cab drivers turned violent. A video went viral, showing a man, now detained, assaulting a cab driver and vandalising his vehicle with a brick.
In the video, the cab driver says he had gone for breakfast and pleads with the man, identified as Sonya Gupta, not to beat him up. However, Gupta refuses to listen and repeatedly thrashes him.
He is also seen throwing a brick at his cab, with other drivers trying to intervene and separating the two.
Police detained Gupta, whose video of him assaulting the cab driver was captured by his friends, for questioning.
“The video is currently circulating on social media. Sonya Gupta has been detained and a further investigation is underway,” said Lonavala Rural Police Inspector Dinesh Tayde.
Notably, outstation cab drivers have been assaulted by their local counterparts in the past and some MLAs are allegedly involved in such incidents.
