A 40-year-old man, Naveen Arora, whose late grandfather Dina Nath had served as the RSS city head in Firozpur and whose father, and he were also associated with the organisation, was shot dead by two unidentified men in Punjab’s Firozpur on Sunday evening.
Police said Arora had left his shop and was returning home to spend time with his children when the assailants fired at him near Budhwara Wala Mohalla. He died on the spot. Family members and traders gathered at the scene and expressed anger over the shooting.
“Naveen Arora is my son and we were all sitting and talking. He goes out and comes back to be with his kids every day. Just five minutes after he left, a couple of boys came and informed us that someone shot my son,” his father Baldev said.
“Naveen was on his way home when two unidentified individuals shot him. Our team is investigating and we are also scanning CCTV footage,” SSP Firozpur Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said.
CCTV footage from the locality shows two men running after the firing and escaping. Police said teams are using the visuals to identify the attackers.
SSP Firozpur Bhupinder Singh and MLA Ranbir Singh Bhullar visited the spot and said multiple teams have been formed to trace the shooters. The SSP said the attackers would be arrested soon.
Arora is survived by two young children. Trade Association President Ashwini Mehta and relatives said he had closed his shop and was heading home when the two assailants shot him. They demanded that the police make swift arrests.
Police said efforts to identify and arrest the attackers are underway.
