Tabu reflects on her career and rules out debuting as a Gen Z actor: “I’m happy I did it when I did”
Tabu turned showstopper for renowned designer duo Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, and during a post-show interaction with Diet Sabya, she was asked whether she would consider debuting in today’s Gen Z era. The actor laughed and said, “I don’t think I’ll be entering the movies now. I’m happy I did when I did it.”
She stunned the audience in black trousers, a black cowl-neck tunic, and a matching black coat featuring intricate silver hand embroidery and sparkling silver crystals. As she walked the stage, she drew applause and cheers from the crowd, which included veteran actors Jaya Bachchan, Neetu Kapoor, and Soni Razdan. Jaya Bachchan was seen blowing flying kisses to Tabu on stage, creating a heartwarming moment that quickly went viral online.
Tabu made her film debut in 1985 with Dev Anand’s Hum Naujawan and later played her first lead role in the Telugu film Coolie No. 1. She made her Bollywood debut with Pehla Pehla Pyar alongside Rishi Kapoor and went on to gain recognition with films like Vijaypath, Jeet, and Haqeeqat. She won her first National Award for Best Actress for portraying a young woman affected by the Punjab insurgency in Maachis (1996). Over the years, she delivered several commercial hits including Iruvar, Border, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Andhadhun, and Hera Pheri, while earning critical acclaim for performances in Chandni Bar, Astitva, and The Namesake.
Recently, Tabu appeared as Sister Francesca in the American sci-fi series Dune: Prophecy, which explores the origins of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful group with extraordinary abilities in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe.
She will next be seen in Priyadarshan’s horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla, co-starring Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar, and Wamiqa Gabbi. The film is scheduled for a 2026 release in cinemas.
