Karan Johar revealed his dream casting for a contemporary version of his 1998 hit, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai a film that originally starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji.

In a recent appearance on the digital platform hosted by Sania Mirza, when asked who would play the iconic roles of Anjali, Rahul and Tina if the film were remade for today’s generation, Johar didn’t hold back. “I think Alia would be an absolutely great Anjali. I think Ranveer Singh would be a great Rahul, and Ananya would be a great Tina,” he said.
When Sania joked, “And none of them would actually be acting that much,” the filmmaker responded with a smile, “I think it would be a great pairing.” He further elaborated that the role of Tina “could be Ananya, Janhvi, Sara it could be any of the younger nepo babies.”
On the topic of nepotism, Johar was emphatic: when asked if he had ever launched someone at the behest of their family, he asserted, “No. I knew their parents, but no parent ever called me and said, ‘Launch my kid.’ Never. Not once.” He added, “I know they are nepo babies. I know their parents. I’ve seen them grow up in front of me. But none of their parents have ever called me I have always been the one to call. And let me tell you, I’ve even been refused a few times.”
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai marked Johar’s directorial debut and became a landmark in the commercial Hindi film space, both for its box-office success and its cultural resonance.
While the remake is clearly a speculative wish-list rather than an official project announcement, the director’s casting preferences already reflect his aspirational vision: bringing the nostalgic charm of the original into a modern context with newer talent. It remains to be seen if this dream ensemble ever moves beyond conversation into production.
