Actress Nikita Dutta looked back at her decade-long journey in the entertainment industry during an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama. Marking 10 years since her debut, Dutta spoke candidly about entering acting without any formal training and the unconventional way she learned her craft.
EXCLUSIVE: Nikita Dutta says she learned acting “from zero,” worked “14–15 hours a day, 63 days straight without an off;” recalls being around “genius-level people”
“When I started acting, I was actually somebody who had taken zero acting lessons or workshops in my life,” she revealed. “I was directly on a television set where I was acting 14–15 hours a day, 63 days at a stretch without an off. As difficult and brutal as it sounds, I feel I picked up a lot of my art from this entire setup.”
Dutta, who began her career with television before transitioning to films and streaming projects, shared that her early years on set became her classroom. “Being on a set, being in front of the camera every single day is where I learned how to act,” she explained. “I used to be around people who had actually come from the New York Film Academy and had learned acting. They would talk about films and performances every time we came out of a film. I would feel so out of place thinking, ‘Oh my god, these are all genius-level people and what am I doing here having done nothing?’”
Reflecting on how her perspective evolved, she added, “I realised none of them are working today, unfortunately. But whatever I managed to pick up was by just being in front of the camera. I always tell people this is not a medium where you can learn — you just need to keep practising.”
Over the years, Nikita has worked across television, films, and streaming platforms, balancing diverse roles and genres. Her last release was Jewel Thief, which was a direct-to-OTT release.
