Known for his wit and charm, filmmaker Karan Johar recently let his fans see a sweeter — quite literally — side of himself. In a new episode of Serving It Up With Sania, hosted by tennis champion Sania Mirza, Karan walked down memory lane as he shared a hilarious and heartwarming childhood story about his obsession with chocolate cakes.

“There was a scene in Zoya Akhtar’s film, Dil Dhadakne Do, a scene where Shefali (Shah) is deeply wounded about something and she eats his cake. And when I saw that scene, I had tears in my eyes because I remember there was a lady called Azra Gorewala who used to make this chocolate cake. She used to bake it out of breech candy,” Karan shared during the chat.

The director of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani continued with a nostalgic smile, “And I used to call her and say, Aunty, it’s my birthday. I want a one kilo cake. And I would send somebody to collect it.”

He then revealed the twist that had both him and Sania in splits: “Was it your birthday? It was never my birthday. One particular year, she called my mom and she said, Mrs. Johar, I want to bring to your notice. Your son has called for four chocolate cakes saying it’s his birthday in the same year.”

Reminiscing about his mother’s reaction, Karan said, “And my mother just reprimanded me at that time. But those days, I remember opening this brown box, seeing this beautiful icing. Anybody who grew up in South Bombay will know exactly what I’m talking about.”

He fondly described the treat that sparked his love for cakes: “And she had this lovely, colourful icing on this black, smooth chocolate cake. And I would sit with this big spoon and eat the whole cake and it gave me so much joy in those days.”

The Dil Dhadakne Do moment that triggered the memory comes from Zoya Akhtar’s 2015 family drama starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Ranveer Singh, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, and Anushka Sharma — a film that explored family bonds and emotional undercurrents aboard a luxury cruise.

Karan’s candid confession reminded fans why he remains one of Bollywood’s most relatable storytellers — both on and off screen.
