In a remarkable cultural crossover, actress-singer Iulia Vântur became the first Indian star to perform a Bollywood song at the Vatican City, singing ‘Teri Meri Prem Kahani’ from the 2011 film Bodyguard in front of Pope Francis and an international audience at Paul VI Hall.

Iulia Vantur makes history by performing Salman Khan’s ‘Teri Meri’ at Vatican in front of the pope
The performance was part of the 60-year commemoration of the Nostra Aetate declaration, a milestone event emphasising inter-faith harmony and global cultural dialogue. Vântur’s rendition of the song originally composed by Himesh Reshammiya marked a unique moment of Indian music meeting global spiritual ceremony.
Reflecting on her experience, Vântur shared, “Meeting the Pope was an experience beyond words. His presence radiates warmth and kindness. It filled me with gratitude and a deep sense of calm, and reminded me that true faith lies in compassion, humility, and human connection.
She added, “Singing Teri Meri at the Vatican was more than just a performance it was a prayer through music. To bring an Indian song to such a spiritual place felt magical. It showed that music can cross every border, every faith, and speak the language of love.”
At the event, Vântur also performed a Romanian version of ‘Teri Meri’ and unveiled her unreleased track ‘Corinde Corinde’. She later joined artists Poo Bear, Stephen Devassy and Vijay Yesudas for an emotional group rendition of “We Are the New World (Keep Doing Good)”, celebrating unity and hope.
This moment signals not only a personal milestone for Vântur but also a wider recognition of Bollywood’s potential as a global cultural ambassador.
