The Indian Women’s Cricket Team’s historic World Cup victory has prompted the re-release of Ghoomer, the film directed by R. Balki. Starring Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher, the latter playing a female cricketer, Ghoomer is all set for a theatrical re-release this Friday, November 7. In conversation with real-life cricketer Saiyami Kher who starred in Ghoomer.

How do you feel about the return of Ghoomer?
Ghoomer is a film that is the closest to my heart because I was a sportsperson before I started acting. To get such an author backed role so early in my career took me by surprise. Again a maker like R balki could have gotten any of the top A listers but he said If I do this film it’s with you or no one else. Usually producers like to play it safe and get a big star but Balki sir does everything out of the box and follows his conviction. It’s the most special film I have done. Ghoomer took everything out of me, physically and emotionally.
Another brilliant performance of yours is in a little seen film titled 8 AM Metro
8 AM Metro happened because Anurag (Kashyap) sir introduced me to Raj (Rachakonda). Raj is a very passionate film maker who has done only 1 film before. I loved the script. Reminded me of Before Sunrise… and I felt good about it right away. I have always only worked with very established directors, so this was a first for me and the process was very different and very collaborative. These two have spoilt me and made me greedy as an actor. To get two author backed roles in such a short time has been a dream.
What do you remember of your debut film Mirzya?
Time really flies. I still remember my auditions with Rakeysh (Omprakash) Mehra sir and first day of shoot like it was yesterday. I look back very fondly at Mirzya because it gave me an entry into this beautiful world of films. And got the privilege of knowing and spending time with the legendary Gulzar saab. The journey has been a roller coaster from lots of ups and downs.
What have you learnt from your ten years in the film industry?
Realising how important commercial success is to get your next project. I enjoyed my film Jaat with Sunny Deol sir. It was a completely new experience and (I) thoroughly enjoyed it. Getting to work with the OG action star was quite an experience. I was backed by my makers. I have loved (directors) like Anurag Kashyap sir, Balki sir, Neeraj Pandey sir to name a few. So I am very grateful but definitely not content because I’m a greedy actor wanting to do lots more. I love being in front of camera and cannot imagine my life otherwise. So, I will keep striving to get better and give it my all in all the opportunities I get. I really value the people and friendships and learning experiences I have accrued since my debut.
