Actor Celina Jaitly’s brother, retired Major Vikrant Jaitly, was detained in the United Arab Emirates in September 2024, and has been in detention for over 14 months. Celina Jaitly has now approached the honourable High Court in Delhi, seeking a direction to the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure necessary legal and medical assistance to her brother. Her lawyer Raghav Kacker speaks to us on the case.

So, what really happened to Vikrant? It is very difficult for me to understand what happened to Celina’s brother Vikrant. From what I gather, he was whisked away one evening in Dubai by mysterious men and is missing since then. Is that correct?
Yes, Vikrant and his wife were shopping in the Mall of Emirates and when they went to the parking, two men, dressed in black desert clothing, asked for his ID, put him in the car and drove off.
More than a year has passed since the incident. Is there no indication of what could have happened to Vikrant?
We are completely in the dark as to what happened to him. Hence we filed the Writ Petition to get the MEA activated and for them to aid and assist in gathering information, which will eventually lead to Vikrant being brought back to India.
He is a decorated Indian soldier. Why did it take us so long to galvanize into action?
The to and fro and Chinese walls between the relay of information led to a situation wherein Celina could only approach the Court now, after first exhausting all her alternate remedies.
Would you, as a legal expert, describe his disappearance as kidnapping or something more sinister?
I would not be in a position to comment on that, as the matter is sub judice.
What is your next line of action? What hope do you have to offer Vikrant’s family?
We shall be awaiting the status report from the Ministry Of External Affairs, along with access being provided to Celina, to her brother- accordingly. And if required, we shall consider moving an appropriate interim application in the pending Writ.
Would you agree with me in my opinion that this case of disappearance is unprecedented?
I would not be in a position to comment on whether it’s unprecedented; but it’s definitely egregious.
