Actor Ishaan Khatter has opened up about the performance of his latest film, Homebound, which received critical acclaim but underperformed at the box office. Despite earning praise at international film festivals, the film managed to collect only around Rs. 5 crores in India. However, Ishaan believes that the film’s value goes far beyond its commercial outcome.

Ishaan Khatter says Homebound is not a ‘failure’ despite low box office numbers: “I’m not in denial”
In an interview with PTI, the 30-year-old actor reflected on the film’s journey and its lasting impact. “I don’t think this film is a failure. Films have different journeys. As far as the box office is concerned, I think this film is going to have a long life. And this is not coming from a place of denial—I know the numbers very well. Our hope is to have it reach as many people as possible, and I’m not going to stop working toward that,” he said.
Neeraj Ghaywan directed Homebound, features Ishaan alongside Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor. The story is inspired by true events and follows two migrant workers during the Covid-19 lockdowns. It explores the friendship between a Muslim and a Dalit man, both striving to secure police jobs that promise them dignity long denied by social inequality.
The film, which premiered to standing ovations at several international festivals, was later released in India and has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars this year.
Speaking about the challenges faced by smaller films, Ishaan said, “One hopes for a time when films like these can earn the kind of numbers that big commercial blockbusters do. That would create a culture where stories like this are allowed to exist and thrive. Unfortunately, such films are rare. To change that, the audience needs to become active participants—almost like stakeholders.”
Homebound was produced by Karan Johar and Apoorva Mehta under Dharma Productions, along with Somen Mishra and Adar Poonawalla. Legendary Hollywood filmmaker Martin Scorsese served as the executive producer. The film draws loose inspiration from journalist Basharat Peer’s The New York Times article, “Taking Amrit Home (A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway).”
