Emraan Hashmi is gearing up for his next release, Haq, a courtroom drama inspired by the landmark Shah Bano case. The film, directed by Suparn S. Varma, also stars Yami Gautam in a pivotal role. Emraan will be seen portraying Mohd Ahmed Khan, while Yami plays Shah Bano Begum. The story draws from one of India’s most debated legal battles concerning the rights of Muslim women.
Emraan Hashmi opens up about playing a character with different beliefs in Haq: “Doing something that you don’t understand is the challenge”
Speaking ahead of the release, Emraan reflected on his experience of playing a character whose beliefs differ from his own. He shared, “You might play characters that are close to your ideology or your belief system but the whole idea of being an artiste is also to play characters you don’t understand. So, in the process of playing that character you start understanding them better.”
The actor further told IANS, “When you read the script, you re-read it, when you play those, enact those scenes emotionally, something happens where it is like, ‘Okay this is what this character comes from, this is the truth of the character.’”
Emraan explained that taking on roles far removed from one’s own worldview is what keeps acting exciting. “So that’s something that’s exciting for all actors, and the more distant it is from your belief system, from your ideology, your world view, the more interesting it becomes because you understand yourself, and when you’re playing a character that’s close to you, then where’s the fun in that? You know exactly what that is but then doing something that you don’t understand, that’s the challenge and that is also a certain awakening,” he added.
Haq revisits the real-life case of Shah Bano Begum, who filed a petition in 1978 seeking maintenance from her husband, Mohammed Ahmed Khan. The Supreme Court ruled in her favour in 1985, marking a significant moment in the fight for Muslim women’s rights, though the verdict was later overturned by legislation.
Produced by Junglee Pictures, along with Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta, and Harman Baweja, the film also features Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha, and Aseem Hattangady. Haq is slated to release in theatres on November 7, 2025.
