Kanu Bahl’s Titli received a lot of acclaim in India and abroad. The film was a serious drama starring Shashank Arora, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Ranvir Shorey, Amit Sial and Lalit Behl. On the film’s 10th anniversary, which took place recently, Arora got talking about it in an interview with us.

Where do you place Titli in your repertoire?
Titli will always be the most special. Very grateful to Kanu Behl that I got be a part of it. The film set in motion a series of events I had hoped to be a part of, and had worked towards. A ‘dark film’ for those privileged enough to be unaware of a commoner’s plight. A comedic social commentary for those familiar with it.
Titli is a very violent take of Delhi’s middleclass
Titli is about how not only dreams, but traits like gender violence too make their way down generations of a family, and how they can be stopped. Especially in an environment that dictates the opposite. I believe Titli will be relevant for years to come. I am blessed that Dibakar Banerjee cared for the film and let it thrive in a way no one else could have done and that YRF gave it a platform for the world to see.
In Reema Kagti’s brilliant film Superboys Of Malegaon, you were cast as Rafiq, a smalltown dreamer who wants to fly
What brought me to Malegaon are people who value stories and feelings over money and a bunch of friends who put everything on the line to make a film. That’s what brought me to Malegaon. With any character which actually existed, you have a tighter parameter. My director Reema Kagti gives a balance of instructions and freedom. It’s up to the actor to make use of the them.
How do you view your journey so far?
The journey so far has not been easy for me. I knew nobody when I got here. But Kamal Hassan recently called me his favourite actor, so I guess it’s going well.
