Veteran actor Paresh Rawal recently opened up about the reality of lobbying in prestigious film awards, including India’s National Awards and the Oscars. In a candid conversation on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Rawal acknowledged that while National Awards carry immense respect, they are not entirely free from lobbying, much like other award ceremonies around the world.

Paresh Rawal admits lobbying exists in National Awards: “Thoda bahut hota hoga, par reputed hai”
Rawal, who won the National Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1993 for his performance in Woh Chokri, offered a realistic perspective on the award process. He said, “National Award mein thoda bahut (lobbying) hota hoga. Utna nahi hai jitna baaki ke awards mein hota hai. Baaki ke award ki to baat karo ya na karo, koi farq nahi padta. National Award to National Award hai, reputed hai.” He emphasized that although lobbying happens, it is not on the scale seen in other awards and the National Award retains its reputation.
The actor further revealed that lobbying is fueled by influence and networking, often involving large parties and efforts to sway voters. Speaking about the Oscars, he said, “Lobbying to Oscar Awards mein bhi hoti hai,” drawing parallels to international award practices. He added a humorous example: “Raj ki picture hai. Chalo jitne academy ke jitne members hote hain sabko whip up kiya jaata hai,” indicating how campaigns to win awards involve mobilizing academy members.
When asked if he desires to win any specific awards now, Paresh stated that his focus lies on getting sincere appreciation from directors and writers he has collaborated with. He wants “real recognition” from creative collaborators rather than trophies or public accolades.
Currently, Paresh Rawal is busy with multiple projects. He was recently featured as a tour guide in The Taj Story, a film about a viral video controversy regarding the Taj Mahal’s origins. He also appeared in the horror-comedy Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. Upcoming films for him include Hera Pheri 3, Bhooth Bangla, and Welcome To The Jungle.
