Emraan Hashmi has offered a fresh perspective on Ranbir Kapoor’s controversial blockbuster Animal, clarifying that he did not “hate” the film. Instead, he applauded director Sandeep Reddy Vanga for crafting what he called an “uncorrupted film,” reinforcing the conviction behind the filmmaker’s bold vision.

Speaking to Galatta Plus, Emraan acknowledged that Animal remains divisive, “See Animal, I mean, people might have a divided house there with people either loving the film or hating the film. But I love the film… You can see his conviction there. He’s a director who kind of just went there with all his heart, and he has made the film that he wants to make. It is uncorrupted.”
He went on to single out the directorial choices in Animal, especially the opening sequence: “I saw the first scene in that film… No one takes shots that way. He has not even cut over shoulder for that first scene that went on… There’s the confidence of the director because the scene holds and it’s a long scene…. It is audaciously different what the director has done with that.”
Animal released in December 2023 has continued to fuel debate months after its theatrical run. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, and Anil Kapoor, the film delves into a troubled father-son relationship, revenge, and moral conflict. Despite criticism directed at its portrayal of masculinity, the film became a commercial juggernaut.
Meanwhile, Hashmi is gearing up for his next release titled Haq, described as a legal drama inspired by the landmark Shah Bano case, where he portrays a lawyer. The film, directed by Suparn S Varma and produced by a notable team including Juhi Parekh Mehta and Harman Baweja, is scheduled to hit screens on 7 November.
As Animal continues to be a reference point in Bollywood discourse, comments like Hashmi’s reinforce how polarizing cinema can elicit not just criticism, but genuine admiration.
