Actor Sara Ali Khan opened up about dealing with online trolling, maintaining her mental balance, and allowing herself to feel a full range of emotions — including what she fondly calls her “mini-drama” moments, in a recent interview with Hindustan Times.

Sara Ali Khan talks about handling negativity and embracing her emotions: “It’s definitely not easy when you’re a public figure.”
For Sara, life in the public eye naturally brings constant attention and scrutiny. Over the years, she has learned to handle criticism with grace and focus on what truly matters to her. Sara Ali Khan admitted that being under the spotlight is not always easy, especially when comments turn personal.
On dealing with trolling
Sara, daughter of actors Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh, made her Bollywood debut in 2018 with Kedarnath opposite the late Sushant Singh Rajput. Since then, she has appeared in a range of films including Simmba, Coolie No. 1, Atrangi Re, and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke.
Speaking about handling criticism and social media trolling, Sara said, “It’s definitely not easy when you’re a public figure. Opinions come at you from all directions, invited or not. But over time, I’ve learned to build a bit of a mental filter.”
The 30-year-old actor explained that she has learned to distinguish between constructive feedback and negativity. “I remind myself that constructive criticism is about the work — it helps me grow, learn, and improve. I really value that. But when it gets personal, or when the intention feels like it’s to bring you down rather than lift you up, I try not to let it in,” she shared.
Sara added that staying true to herself is what keeps her grounded. “Not everyone knows you, and not everyone needs to. What matters most is staying connected to who I am — my values, my intentions, and the people who know me off-screen,” said Sara, who is also a brand ambassador for ITC Fiama.
Even so, the actor admitted that there are days when the negativity affects her. “Honestly, as a human, some days things affect me more than I’d like. And that’s okay. But I always come back to my work, my family, my routine, and my friends — the things that keep me real and rooted. At the end of the day, if you’re proud of your work and growing along the way, that’s what truly matters,” she said.
On allowing herself to feel every emotion
Known for her lively and cheerful personality, Sara said she doesn’t feel pressured to always appear upbeat. She believes it’s important to acknowledge every emotion, even on tough days. “I am, most of the time, high energy, but trust me, I have my off days too! We are all human, and I’ve learned it’s totally okay to feel anxious or sad,” she said.
Her approach to dealing with low moments is simple yet refreshing. “I let myself have a mini-drama moment — vent to my diary or friends, binge on a comfort show, and then get back to sparkling. Life’s more fun when you don’t bottle up your emotions, and honestly, it makes the happy moments feel even sweeter,” Sara added.
