In an interview with Screen, Pooja looked back at her time on set and described the dynamic between the lead pair. “Kajol and Shah Rukh were like fire and water,” she said, referring to the contrast in their personalities. Despite that, their strong friendship and chemistry made a lasting impression on her as a teenager.

Pooja first worked with Shah Rukh Khan in King Uncle and recalled how much his stardom had grown by the time DDLJ was made. “His life changed after Deewana, in terms of how the world saw him. But when I met him again, he was still the same person—that’s the true mark of a gentleman,” she said. “He’s a gentle, generous, and intelligent soul.”

Speaking about Kajol, Pooja described her as full of life and confidence. “Kajol is like a feminist class wrapped into a person. She was always her truest self, just bouncing off the walls. I remember thinking I wanted her confidence.”

Reflecting on Shah Rukh and Kajol’s on-screen magic, she added, “They were very good friends. At that age, watching two co-actors—who were both committed to other people, one already married, the other about to be—simulate the most perfect romance, and then go back to being friends after the director called ‘cut,’ was something I hadn’t seen before. That kind of emotional dexterity was fascinating to watch, and I was soaking it all in.”

    About Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Directed by Aditya Chopra in his directorial debut and produced by Yash Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was released on October 20, 1995. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan as Raj Malhotra and Kajol as Simran Singh, two young Indians living in London who meet during a trip across Europe.

Initially at odds, Raj and Simran eventually fall in love. However, complications arise as Simran is already promised to another man in India. The story follows Raj’s journey to India, where he tries to win over her conservative family.

The film redefined romance in Bollywood and holds the record for the longest-running film in Indian cinema, having played continuously at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre since its release 30 years ago.
