A 26-year-old man died by suicide in Lucknow after jumping into a canal following a dispute with his wife of just five months. Bablu Sharma’s body was recovered after a 24-hour search, and a preliminary investigation indicated that a family dispute was what led to the victim to take the drastic step.
According to officials, Bablu, originally from Barabanki and a carpenter by profession, had left home on October 18 with his wife, Pooja, after an argument.
The dispute escalated over the issue of Pooja returning to her maternal home for Diwali, which reportedly upset Bablu. Family members said Bablu wanted his wife to stay with him during the festivities, but she refused.
Bablu stopped his motorcycle near the Indira canal, asked his wife to get off, and then continued alone before jumping into the canal.
Shortly after Bablu jumped, Pooja searched for him and found his bike and belongings on the canal’s edge. Unable to find him, she immediately notified her family and the police.
The search operation, involving divers, lasted nearly a full day before Bablu’s body was recovered on Sunday afternoon.
