A student from Lucknow’s Nagaram area was prevented from dying by suicide on Thursday after police responded to a Meta AI-generated alert based on his social media activity.
The incident followed a dispute between the student and his girlfriend that led to concerning posts online.
The Meta AI system detected the student’s social media posts, which included messages indicating suicidal intent.
Based on this, Meta AI generated an alert received by local law enforcement, prompting immediate action.
Upon arrival, the police found the student in distress and intervened before he could harm himself. Officers communicated with the individual and referred him to a counsellor for support.
Following police counselling, the student gave assurance regarding his future actions, specifically promising not to take such a step again.
Sources said the man had argued with his girlfriend prior to the incident, which contributed to his distress.
This is part of a larger trend, as Uttar Pradesh police have recently taken action based on Meta AI alerts to prevent suicides.
In another case, a month ago, another student was saved within minutes after posting a distressing image and message on Instagram.
Meta AI’s monitoring of Facebook and Instagram posts has contributed to saving lives by alerting authorities to suicide-related content and enabling timely intervention.
Since January 2023, 1,315 individuals in Uttar Pradesh have been saved due to police action triggered by suicide-related alerts from Meta platforms. This collaboration between social media companies and law enforcement is part of a broader preventive strategy in the state.
