With hits such as Brown Sungar and Cruisin’, the Grammy-winning singer’s contribution has been widely recognised for revolutionising Soul music. Now, the untimely death of D’Angelo has sent shockwaves through the whole music industry. As condolences are pouring in for the iconic Soul singer, here’s the cause behind D’Angelo’s shocking death at 51.

D’Angelo’s cause of death at 51: Passes away after battling cancer

D’Angelo passed away on October 14, 2025, at the age of 51 after battling pancreatic cancer, as reported by TMZ. As per the portal, the singer’s fight with the deadly disease was private and kept out of the spotlight. The news of D’Angelo’s passing was officially confirmed by DJ Premier, who had collaborated with the singer for the song Devil’s Pie. Taking to his X handle, DJ Premier wrote:

“Such a sad loss to the passing of D’angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep Peacefully D’ Love You KING.”

D’Angelo is survived by his three children

D’Angelo was never married. He welcomed his first child, a son, in 1998 with his ex-girlfriend Angie Stone, during their 1990s dating. The singer then had two other children. A daughter, who was born in 1999 and a son in 2010. D’Angelo is survived by his three children. A few months before his passing, D’Angelo’s former partner and the mother of his first son, Angie, tragically died in a car crash on March 1, 2025 at the age of 63.

More about D’Angelo’s legacy and life story

D’Angelo was born on February 11, 1974, to a preacher. Since his childhood, he had shown a penchant for music and had reportedly started playing the piano when he was just three years old. After finding his own music group as a teenager and getting recognised for his talents after playing at an amateur night competition, D’Angelo dropped out of school at eighteen to pursue music as a full-time career. He signed with Midnight Songs LLC. D’Angelo started stepping on the ladder of success with his first single, U Will Know which became an instant hit. Then his debut album, Brown Sugar topped the charts for weeks.

Despite this huge success, D’Angelo chose to remain an elusive and enigmatic figure throughout his career. After winning a Grammy Award, he chose to step away from the limelight, having received immense public attention and widespread media coverage. After a decade-long hiatus, the Soul singer made a comeback in 2014 with the song Black Messiah. And as always, this song also struck the right chords for his fans and became a hit.

D’Angelo’s death has left an irreparable hole in the world of music. New age artists such as The Alchemist and Tyler The Creator, have also paid tribute to the legacy that the Soul singer has left behind.

Condolences to the loved ones of Michael ‘D’Angelo’ Archer. May he rest in peace.
