Over the past several years, filmmaker Rohan Sippy has made a mark with a number of successful OTT shows like The Office, three seasons of Criminal Justice, Mithya, Search: The Naina Murder Case, etc. Out of these, the last one released just on Friday. However, Sippy also has successful theatrical films to his credit in the form of Bluffmaster and Dum Maaro Dum. His last theatrical release was Nautanki Saala!, which had released back in 2013.

EXCLUSIVE: Rohan Sippy on whether he would return to theatrical films, “We are not able to plan our careers as much as we want”

In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama for the show Search, when Sippy was asked whether he would like to return to theatrical films, he said, “Actually, the truth is we are not able to plan our careers as much as we want. My learning, at least, tells me that you react to the opportunity in front of you and you get excited by it, then I take it on. I have always loved working on feature films. I keep working on the scripting and trying to develop projects.”

But the filmmaker added that the medium is secondary for him. “Finally, when something exciting comes, whether it’s OTT or films is a secondary thing,” he said. “It’s like, who are the people I will get to work with, what is the story we are telling – these two things are the most important. Obviously, I would love to do a theatrical film. There is nothing like showing a film on the big screen with the audience watching. That’s magic.”

Sippy said that he believes that the reach of an OTT show is as much as a theatrical film or more. “Look at this platform,” he said. “Through JioHotstar, we can reach hundreds of millions of subscribers. Which film can ever reach that? So, I think once you look at what you are doing and you see what you can get out of it, that’s it. You enjoy that and maximize that and look for the next opportunity.”

Speaking about his future projects after Search, Sippy said, “There is one show I have completed for Jio but, I guess, it’s early to talk about it. But hopefully that will be out in the next six months or whenever; I have no idea how they have scheduled. But that is a very fun show. And other than that, just hoping that characters like Sanyukta Das (Kokona Sen Sharma from Search) and Madhav Mishra (Pankaj Tripathi from Criminal Justice) come back soon into all our lives.”

When asked when we can get the next season for Criminal Justice, Deepak Segal, the Chief Creative Officer (CCO) for Applause Entertainment, who was also a part of the interview, said, “In a while.”
