On August 2, 2023, he and Sophie, an author-model and TV host, took to their social media handles to release a statement announcing their separation. On the statement, they shared that their decision came from a mutual and difficult conversation. However, it was Sophie, who, two years later, in March 2025, talked about her separation from Trudeau while talking to ELLE. Sharing details about the same, Sophie said that she had imagined the worst-case scenario while announcing the separation. She mentioned that she didn’t want to be naive and also wanted to protect herself. Sophie said that they all stayed away from their phones and stayed together, as a family. Sophie shared:
“I had to. I didn’t want to be naive. But I also had to protect myself. And when the news went out? Let’s just say that we [all] stayed away from our phones. We were together as a family, [and] we held each other.”

Talking to ELLE, Sophie mentioned that she had to choose authenticity over attachment and had to sit with herself while reflecting on the outcomes. She added that deep inside, she feels integrity and congruence, but she had to sit with it, which was chaotic and tender. Sharing more about Trudeau, Sophie added that she and her ex-husband laughed about it for a long time, and she believed they would continue to do so. Sophie said:
“(I had to) face the truth (and) choose authenticity over attachment. I had to sit with myself, say ‘OK, you need to make decisions here. And all of them will cost you. Which one do you choose?’ So (it was) very difficult. It was filled with integrity. Deep inside, do I feel integrity and congruence? Yes! So I sit with all of it. And it’s chaotic, and it’s a mess, but it’s also loving, compassionate and tender.”
For the unversed, Justin Trudeau and Sophie got engaged in 2004, on former Prime Minister and Justin’s late father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s 85th birthday. Following this, they got married on May 28, 2005, at Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church in Montreal, Canada. They welcomed their first child, Xavier, on October 18, 2007. Then, Sophie gave birth to their only daughter, Ella-Grace, on February 5, 2009. And the duo’s family was completed with the birth of their third child, Hadrien, on February 28, 2014.
