People have been asking on social media whether MTV is shutting down, and there’s no truth to it. It so happened that on October 12, 2025, Paramount Global announced that five music channels of the network, MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live, will cease broadcasting from December 31, 2025. Which means after decades of shaping youth culture and music, MTV music channels are going to be off-air, while the main MTV channel will remain as it is, thereby focusing on reality programming.
Why is MTV shutting down its five music channels?
Throughout generations, music channels have provided an entertainment corner for viewers, becoming the go-to destination to experience pop culture, music videos, throwback hits, live performances, and more. So, with the closing of these five channels, people actually remained shocked about what might have caused MTV to make such a decision. Reportedly, the shutdown of the five music channels is happening in the UK and some parts of Europe, and it will eventually occur in several other countries. Reports revealed that the reason MTV is shutting its five music channels is because of the broader cost-cutting initiative of its parent company, Paramount. Reportedly, Paramount is trying to reduce its spending by USD 500 million globally, and if it’s true, then these closures might also occur in Australia, Poland, France, and Brazil.
If we look at modern-day music consumption, it’s pretty much visible that the audience no longer waits for the songs to stream on TV, and they focus on small screens. So, if people feel the need for music, unlike in the past decades, they don’t wait for MTV to stream the same, and instead opt for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and other streaming platforms. And this is possibly the main reason that the viewership could have dropped, leading the parent company, Paramount to opt for a cost-cutting initiative, which also included MTV bidding goodbye to its five music channels.

MTV cutting its five music channels is surely a heartbreaking decision, for that matter, and reacting to this, MTV VJ, Simone Angel shared a statement with BBC, stating that she is in disbelief. She added that people need music, and when we turned to our own bubbles through our mobiles, MTV was a place that brought everyone together for decades. Expressing her sadness, Simone said:
“I am really sad, and I’m a little bit in disbelief, and I know it’s been a long time coming. We need to support these artists and we all need to dance again and listen to music. And I know we do that online in our own little bubbles, but MTV was the place where everything came together. So it really does break my heart.”
