How to keep your baby’s sleep routine on track during the festive season

The festive season is a time of happiness, family gatherings, and endless celebrations. But for parents of infants and toddlers, it can also mean disrupted sleep schedules, noisy nights, and overstimulated babies. Experts warn that while it’s natural to want to be part of the festivities, keeping a baby’s sleep routine consistent is essential for their mood, growth, and immunity.

According to Dr Gurleen Sikka, Lead Consultant, Dept of Neonatology & Paediatrics at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, babies thrive on predictability. “Holding on to small anchors like a fixed morning wake-up time or a familiar bedtime story gives them a sense of comfort even when the surroundings change,” she says.

STICK TO KEY SLEEP CUES EVEN WHEN ROUTINES SHIFT

Dr Sikka suggests maintaining a few familiar rituals that signal it’s time to sleep, such as dimming the lights, humming a lullaby, or reading a short story. These cues help the baby understand that it’s bedtime, even if the timing shifts slightly during the festive rush.

“If a nap gets delayed due to visitors or travel, it’s okay to adjust the timing a bit,” she adds. “But skipping naps completely should be avoided, as overtired babies often find it harder to sleep at night.”

CREATE CALM CORNERS AMID THE CHAOS

Festivals often mean loud music, lights, and laughter, all of which can overwhelm a baby. Setting up a mini quiet zone in a corner room, away from the main celebration, can make a huge difference. Keep the space dimly lit, play soft background music, and bring along familiar comfort items like a blanket, stuffed toy, or sleep sack.

“These small details make babies feel safe even in unfamiliar environments,” Dr Sikka explains. “It helps them relax and fall asleep despite the excitement outside.”

    MANAGE NOISE, VISITORS, AND OVERSTIMULATION

Dr Naveen Prakash Gupta, Senior Consultant – Paediatrics and Neonatology at Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital, says the biggest sleep disruptors during festivals are noise, late-night events, and too many visitors. “Parents can use white noise machines or soothing lullabies to mask external sounds,” he recommends.

He also advises limiting how many people handle the baby, especially close to nap time or bedtime. Over handling and constant stimulation from lights and sounds can make infants cranky and overtired. “Offer extra cuddles and quiet bonding time during the day to help them feel secure,” Dr Gupta adds.

AFTER THE FESTIVITIES: GENTLY RETURN TO NORMAL

It’s natural for the baby’s sleep schedule to get slightly off track during festivals, and parents shouldn’t panic. Experts suggest gradually returning to the routine instead of imposing strict schedules immediately.

“A day or two of irregular sleep won’t harm the baby,” says Dr Gupta. “The key is to ease them back into their normal rhythm with patience and consistency.”

By balancing celebration and rest, families can enjoy the festive spirit without compromising their child’s comfort. A well-rested baby is calmer, happier, and better able to enjoy the love and warmth that festivals bring.
