The Godfather famed actress, Diane Keaton, passed away on October 11, 2025. It was in 2017 when her love for real estate actually started. The actress had multifaceted interests which were not just restricted to the acting world but went beyond that. Diana did work as a photographer, writer and had an ardent love for architecture, which was limitless. Diane was a big fan of buildings and architecture, and in the past was pretty open about her adoration for buildings and beauty preservation.
It was at the age of 79 that Diane had built her second life brick by brick. She liked to follow in the footsteps of her dad, who was also a real estate agent in Los Angeles, and she learned from him. In the course of her life, Diane had restored, reimagined impressive portfolio homes that had varied architectural styles ranging from Spanish mission homes to modern marvels.

According to a report by the ETimes, Diane’s first home was located in Sullivan Canyon, which she created using her own ideas, as discussed in her book, The House That Pinterest Built. The property spanned across 8000 square metres and, in totality, was an amalgamation of all that she loved. Earlier, in an interview with the Architectural Digest, while speaking about the building process, she said:
“I fell in love with the bricks, and I fell in love with the mortar. I wanted to have space between the bricks so they could have a life of their own.”
Diane Keaton was also a part of the Los Angeles Conservancy
For more than 2 decades, Diane was also a part of the Los Angeles Conservancy, as her love for architecture transformed into activism. For years, she went into the fight towards the right to protect historical Spanish homes. She had joined the organisation after a historical Spanish house had made her curious, for it was owned by the members of the conservancy. For Diane, houses were always of her first interest, and the late actress got historic homes and also restored them. For the late actress, photography was something that did not require any form of words.
Diane’s passion for photography got her way into work as a curator and also an author. She did publish many photography as well as design books such as California Romantica, House, The House That Pinterest Built and Saved: My Picture World. Each one of them showcased her creative curiosity as it was a blend of design manifestation.
Diane Keaton redesigned homes in Southern California
From redesigning Spanish Colonials to adding industrial styles to her projects, Diane’s work of storytelling via designs reflected her passion in Southern California. It was in the early 1990s when the late actress had taken a dilapidated Spanish-style home located in Beverly Hills and did a restoration of the same with original tiles along with vintage lights. She was addicted to architecture with the project and earlier in an interview with the Architectural Digest shared:
“I always had an interest in homes and the concept of home, but the problem is I never really land and stay. Something’s wrong. But something’s right, because I love it.”
Diane, since then, had worked a lot with designers and also architects to bring old buildings back to life and also transform all the forgotten spaces into warm and comfortable homes. Diane earlier had also told the publication that she was always drawn to things with a past like a cracked tile, faded wall as it reminded her that in life everything came with imperfections.

Keaton handpicked the 75,000 bricks it took to construct her 8,000-square-foot home. Her industrial-style home was named The House That Pinterest Built. Keaton had collected countless Pinterest images to make her Sullivan Canyon home. Diane, if not an actress,s would have been an interior designer, and giving a sneak into her private life, the actress earlier told the publication:
“I follow my impulses just like I did with acting. When I bought that apartment in the San Remo, it was a tower apartment. I had to sell it because they wouldn’t let me rent it out, I still really resent that! You could just see out everywhere! That was my first opportunity to just spatially become acquainted with something that was a big square that could break into other big squares, and it was just filled with light.”

For Diane, Pinterest was soothing as it always led her to things and made everything look better. She also had a library of books, which also served as an inspiration to her, and in Saved: My Picture World, Keaton had also made a compilation of many photos that had her personal reflection and poetic comments. Diane always had an architectural spirit in her, where she first snapped Lloyd Wright’s historic Samuel Novarro home, renovated it and brought it to the market.
